Lavinia
Magliocco
From a very young age, Lavinia knew she wanted to dance. She began
her studies in Cincinnati with Myrl Laurence, left at age 14 to
go to North Carolina School of the Arts, where she graduated high
school as an honors student with a Dance Diploma, with special studies
in Anatomy and Physiology. She also studied at School of American
Ballet in New York City. At the age of eighteen, Lavinia was diagnosed
with Crohns disease and told she should no longer pursue a
career in dance. |
In
spite of this, she continued to dance, learning historical ballroom
dances under social dance historian Richard Powers, whom she assisted
in translating a 19th century Italian dance manual, Balli
di Oggi. She also got a Bachelor of Arts degree, Magna Cum
Laude, from the University of Cincinnati while teaching fitness
at the local YMCA. Lavinia began her work in pilates after her first
surgery in 1990.
She first studied pilates with Cincinnati Ballets physical
therapist Jaqui Haas, whom she later received referrals from. Within
three years, she was working professionally again, dancing six seasons
with New Yorks Metropolitan Opera Ballet. Her performing experience
also includes musical theatre and radio. Subsequently, she taught
pilates in New York City at Bodies in Balance. Certifications include
Mat Work at Pole Star, full equipment with Michelle Larsson of Core
Dynamics, and specializations with Physicalmind The Method Institute,
of which she is a longstanding member. Lavinia is also a published
writer of over 80 articles on dance for the Cincinnati Enquirer,
Antenna Magazine, Clifton Magazine, and Dance Magazine.
After leaving New York City in 1998 Lavinia established her own
private studio in Portland, Oregon, concurrent to teaching ballet
at Oregon Ballet Theatre, and pilates at Nike Headquarters, where
she helped set up a pilates program. In 2001 Lavinia suffered a
major relapse of the Crohns disease. The subsequent surgery
involved a 12 inch vertical incision on her abdomen, and a long
recovery (the incision was not closed entirely for medical reasons).
Applying everything she learned and her many years experience teaching,
Lavinia has achieved a full recovery, including a flat stomach!
